Top Tips for Keeping Pests Outside this Winter

Pests, just like humans, seek shelter from the cold. That means that they will be looking towards your house with an eye on finding a nice warm spot where they can ride out the winter. If you want to avoid this, there are the top tips for keeping pests outside this winter.

Seal Openings

Even the smallest cracks and openings around windows, doors, pipes, vents and screens can provide enough room for pests to sneak inside. Be sure to caulk around these areas and make sure they are closed off.

Move Firewood Away from the Home

With the cold weather, it can be tempting to place firewood close to the door and easily within reach. However, for pest control purposes, you will want to make sure that any firewood piles are at least 20 feet away from the home.

Cut Back Trees and Shrubs

Branches and leaves that are allowed to grow right up to the house provide the perfect little bridges for pests to enter the home. Try to keep trees and shrubs cut back two feet from the house.

Remove Garbage

Be sure to thoroughly clean in and around the home. This means sweeping behind the fridge, wiping down counters, removing trash from the yard, and making sure that all trash cans are secured with a lid.

Hire a Pest Control Expert

Regular visits from a pest control professional will help you keep pests away and make sure that you are identifying infestations as quickly as possible. A fall appointment will help you get prepared for winter. If you live in or around the Triangle area, call the team at Capital Pest to schedule a consultation and discuss your pest control needs.
