Signs of a Wildlife Infestation and How to Prevent It

Part of being human means cohabitating with wildlife on some level. Even urban areas aren’t immune to wildlife infestations. However, unlike pests, which can occupy practically any room in your home and your landscape, wildlife tends to seek out hidden areas that you don’t commonly use. Attics, basements, crawlspaces, and even the garage can be attractive places for wildlife. The problem is that these animals can spread disease and cause damage to your home. With that in mind, here are the signs of a wildlife infestation and steps you can take to prevent the problem in the first place.

#1 Sign – Rustling and Squeaking Noises

Perhaps the first sign of a wildlife infestation that you will notice is rustling and squeaking noise. Different species of wildlife will be found in walls, decks, attics, and other remote places. Even if you don’t immediately spot them, you will be able to hear them as they move around different parts of your home. In most cases, these sounds will become more prevalent at night.

#2 Overturned Trash Cans

Trash cans are an easy target for wildlife looking for a quick source of food. You may notice that your cans are overturned, moved, or otherwise disturbed.

#3 Gnaw Marks

Wildlife can be destructive to your home, which means that you may notice gnaw marks, broken off wood chips, or even damaged electrical wire as the animals chew away at your home.

#4 Droppings

Unwelcomed wildlife will leave behind feces and urine that will cause stains, cause a foul odor, and contaminate your home

How to Prevent Wildlife Infestations

The simplest action you can take to prevent a wildlife infestation is to keep your home clear. Animals are going to be attracted to easy food sources, so keep your floors and countertops free of crumbs and don’t forget to also clean those hard to reach areas. You will also want to make sure that your food is securely stored in airtight containers. That goes for your garbage as well; garbage should be removed regularly and stored in a container with a lid. Finally, you will want to regularly repair cracks and holes around your home so that animals don’t have a clear entrance into your home.
