Protect Your Home from Pests during the Spring

Spring has officially come to the Triangle. That means warmer temperatures, outdoor activities, and the return of pests who are usually less active during the winter months. While certain bugs play important role in the ecosystem, that doesn’t mean you want them entering your home or ruining your time outdoors. Follow these tips to prepare for spring and protect your home from pests.

  1. Remove Standing Water

Pests like mosquitoes, ants, and even termites will hunt for water in order to aid in their survival and reproduction. You can discourage them from targeting your home by eliminating water sources. This includes emptying planters that may have collected water, keeping an eye on pet bowls, and fixing any leaky pipes.

  1. Caulk and Seal Your Home

Pests can enter the home through even the tiniest of cracks. This spring, take the time to thoroughly inspect your home and identify any potential entry points. Pay special attention to areas around windows and doors and make sure that these are thoroughly sealed.

1. Cut Back Plants

It is important to keep plants, shrubs, and trees a couple of feet away from the house If branches are allowed to grow right next to the house, they provide a convenient bridge for pests to cross over and find their way inside.

2. Install Yellow Bug Lights

Standard outdoor bulbs tend to attract bugs. Simply replacing them with yellow bug lights will provide you with the safety and illumination you need while also discouraging bugs from swarming around your home.

3. Clean out Garbage Bins

Throughout the year, you will want to regularly empty garbage and recycling bins. In the spring, take the time to actually clean out the bins so that you aren’t inadvertently attracting pests.
