NC Spiders to Watch Out For in Your Sheds
Your shed provides the perfect space for spiders. There are plenty of dark corners that go undisturbed, old cardboard boxes to hide in, and other pests to eat. In most cases, the spiders you will encounter in your shed are harmless. However, there are a few NC spiders that you will need to watch out for.
Black Widow Spider
You have probably heard of this poisonous spider, but did you know that it can be found in NC? The females are easily identifiable by the red hourglass shape on the underside of their abdomens. Male black widow spiders tend to be smaller than females, which can have a total length of about 1.5 inches.
Black widows love to hide in spaces where they feel protected. This includes under rocks, in thick plant growth, and in outdoor equipment boxes, such as the electrical meter on the outside of your home.
The spiders will create a web to snare prey and then inject it with a paralyzing venom that attacks the nervous system. The actual bite doesn’t usually hurt that bad, so people often don’t realize they have been bitten until they start experiencing symptoms of sweating, tremors, and nausea. The bite may leave a bluish-red spot that is surrounded. A doctor can administer an antivenom to help with the symptoms.
Brown Recluse Spider
Brown recluse spiders can be identified by their fiddle-shaped marking where the neck of the fiddle points at the rear of the spider. They feed at night and tend to stay far away from any activity. Typically, any bites are accidental but can have severe consequences.
It will take 3-8 hours for the site of the bite to become tender, swollen, and red. You may also notice a blistering wound and in the most serious cases, a lesion can form that requires surgery. Fortunately, these spiders are not common in NC, but if you do have an encounter, be sure to immediately seek medical attention.
