How to Prevent Dangerous Rodents: Winter Pest Control Tips

Rodents can present some dangers if they find their way into your home. Not only do these pests spread disease through their fecal matter, they can also cause damage to your home. They can gnaw through wires and ruin drywall and other material. Here is how you can prevent rodents from setting up camp in your home during the winter.

Seal Your Home

When the weather turns cold, rodents and other pests are on the hunt for heat, food, and water. That is why your home can provide the perfect accommodations. The best way to prevent rodents is to make sure that your home is tightly sealed. Conduct a thorough inspection of your home and use silicone caulk to fill in the gaps around doors, windows, and pipes. Rodents can slip through even the smallest of holes, to pay attention to detail.

Cover Vents and Chimneys

While you can’t completely seal off vents and chimneys, you can cover them in a screen to prevent rodents from entering.

Keep Your Home Clean

Again, rodents are looking for food and water. If you have a leaky pipe or a kitchen full of crumbs, you are inviting rodents to come dine. Repair any leaks, store your food in airtight containers, and be sure to clean up regularly.

Move Firewood

Homeowners often stack firewood close to the home so that it is convenient to grab during the winter, but the pile can attract rodents that will then enter your home. Make sure that your firewood is stored 20 feet from the home.

Keep Crawlspaces and Attics Dry

These areas can be easy to ignore, but proper ventilation will keep your crawlspace and attic dry and prevent you from inadvertently attracting rodents.
