How to Get Rid of Rats – 3 Simple Steps

rat infestation

While some pests are simply a nuisance and don’t pose any health risks, rats can transmit diseases to humans and cause significant damage to your home. If you have noticed droppings, heard rats in your walls, or actually seen them in and around your home, you should take action immediately. This is one problem that won’t simply disappear.

Here are a few effective ways to get rid of rats:

Trapping Rats

If you were able to catch the problem early on and you aren’t dealing with a full-scale infestation, you may be able to get rid of rats through trapping. Typically, rats will stay close to the walls as they run through your home to avoid being seen, so be sure to place traps next to walls. For the first few days, simply leave out the unset traps. This will allow the rats to get used to the traps. Once you can see that they are eating the bait, you can set the traps. As a general rule of thumb, it is always a good idea to set up more traps than you think you might need.

Baiting Rats

In cases where there is a larger infestation, baiting may be necessary. This technique uses poison to get rid of rats. While baiting is an effective tool, it is a good idea to leave this up to a pest professional so that pets and children are kept safe from the poison.

Depending on your specific circumstances, both trapping and baiting may be necessary to effectively get rid of the rats.

Contact a Pest Professional

The best way to safely eliminate rats is to call a professional. A pest expert will be able to properly employ baiting and trapping techniques so that your home is completely rid of rats and you don’t have to worry about infestations in the future.
