Seal Cracks and Gaps

Check your windows, doors, foundation, and pipes for any cracks or gaps. These tiny spaces can provide pests with an entry point into your home. Sealing up these spaces can also make your home more comfortable and energy efficient during the winter.

Clean Your Home

Turn your attention to the interior of your home. There are probably some hard to reach places, like the corners of cupboards or behind the fridge that haven’t had any attention in a while. These are places where crumbs can accumulate and pests love to hide. Do some deep cleaning so that you aren’t inadvertently inviting bugs into your home.

Remove Stagnant Water

As pests emerge in the spring, they will be looking for convenient sources of food and water. Over the winter, rain and melted snow can create puddles and stagnant water.  Before winter, be sure to remove any receptacles, such as empty flower pots, that can collect water. Continue to monitor your landscape for places where water tends to collect and be sure to take care of these. 

Pay Attention to Nesting Areas

Different pests tend to gravitate to specific places. For instance, it is common for wasps to build nests under the eaves of porches. There may also be a certain part of the yard where ants like to nest. Be sure to clean out these places and keep an eye out for any signs of nesting.
