4 Common Types of Spiders in NC and How to Get Rid of Them

North Carolina is home to all types of insects, pests, and spiders that can find their way into your home. Learn more about 4 types of spiders that are common to NC and what you can do to get rid of them.

Yellow Garden Spider

This spider is known by a long list of names and is common in areas throughout the United States, including North Carolina. It has distinctive yellow and black markings and the females, which are larger, can have abdomens that measure over an inch. While they can bite if they are disturbed, they aren’t poisonous and the bite has been compared to a bee sting.

Orb Weaver

Orb Weavers are unique because they weave horizontal webs and hang upside down in the middle to catch their prey. They tend to have green and yellow legs and sides and red or orange spots located at the bottom of the abdomen.

Tan Jumping Spider

Compared to many other spiders that have a more spindly appearance, the tan jumping spider can look more formidable. They are able to leap about four times their body length in order to attack their prey. Once they jump, they also release a strand of silk that also helps capture their prey. They tend to be small, hairy, and harmless.

Common House Spider

If you have had to clear cobwebs from the far corners of your home, they were probably put there by the common house spider. This spider gravitates toward human dwellings and will choose random locations for its webs. If they aren’t able to successfully find food, they will abandon the web and start over.

Getting Rid of Spiders in Your Home

First and foremost, keep your home clean and repair any gaps in screens, windows, and doors. These steps will prevent spiders from setting up shop in the first place. To help get rid of spiders, use a vacuum hose to immediately remove webs when you notice them in your home. You can also place peppermint oil and vinegar around the house as natural repellents. There are insecticides that can be purchased at your local hardware store, but these should be handled carefully and according to instructions.
